Textbooks for Uganda
A partnership with the St. Kizito Foundation

The Need

Northern Uganda has been plagued by civil war for more than 20 years.  Governments and rebel groups have committed atrocities against the population, especially children.
Education is critical to breaking the cycle of poverty.  However, the state supported schools do not adequately prepare students for higher education.
 

The Call

Jesus Christ instructed us to feed the hungry and clothe the naked.   As His disciples, we are called to reach out to others.  "Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me." (Matthew 24:40)

Fr. Don Dunson (Professor of Moral Theology at St. Mary Seminary) writes:   
The opposite of love is not hate but indifference.  Many young Africans do not worry that the rest of the world might hate them. ...They fear that the global population....are indifferent, that they simply don't care.
 

The Response

The St. Kizito Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by Fr. Don Dunson, provides hope to children in Uganda by providing scholarships to attend high quality private schools.  The Foundation also provides counseling and community to the students.
 

Saint Anselm

While scholarships enable these students to attend school, they still lack basic supplies that will allow them to succeed.  St. Anselm is partnering with St. Kizito Foundation to create a textbook library for St. Kizito scholars.  The textbooks will be shared among the students.  Funds generated at St. Anselm will purchase the needed textbooks in Uganda for the library.
